The run is on Saturday, September 18 and you can run a 5k, 10k, 20k, 40k or 60k. Here is the link for the run…..
http://www.1800hocking.com/indianrun

Now for the important stuff….camping, eating and drinking. There are a group of us that camp Friday night and Saturday night at Hocking Hills state park. I have already reserved 5 sites (sites 98, 100, 101, 102 and 103) that have 2 tents on each site. There are some open slots as of the sending of this email so let me know if you want in and I'll get on the list. Here is the camp site layout in case you are thinking about getting your own site. If you get a site, let me know the number and if you have room for another Strider and I will keep the list current. It cost $62.25 per site for the 2 nights. Kim usually coordinates the food stuff for the Friday night spaghetti dinner and Saturday cookout and huge Sunday breakfast. More on that to come as the list of attendees is finalized. Here is a link to Hocking Hills state park…. Let me know if you have questions or I missed something. It is a great family time which includes horse back riding or canoeing on Saturday afternoon and some hiking at Old Man's cave.
http://www.ohiodnr.com/parks/tabid/743/Default.aspx

32nd Annual Camelback Run, etc.

Here are some upcoming events from the Fremont, OH area club--

- Couch Potato 5K Van Trip- Saturday, May 22nd. The presentation will begin at 10 a.m., at an informal brunch to be held at the Clover Blossom Legacy Retirement Community, 100 McAuley Dr., in Rochester, N.Y. The date and time of the presentation were chosen to coincide with the start time of the 114th running of the Boston Marathon, a race that Frank has competed in 30 times.

Frank ran his first marathon at the 1967 Boston Marathon when he was 35 years old. Since then he has completed an incredible 965 marathons. For three years, 1994-1997, Frank held the World Record for most marathons completed according to the Guinness Book of Records.

A resident of Rochester, N.Y., the 78-year old Frank has run, trotted and walked in marathons in every state in the Union and many nations abroad. His total of 965 Marathons completed equates to an average of over 20 marathons a year since his first in 1967. All totaled he's logged some 25,000 miles in his marathon races alone, and estimates place his total number of miles run at 86,000.

His first marathon was the venerable race in Boston, where he would answer the starter's gun 29 more times in that city alone. He also ran marathons in Ottawa, Athens, and several European nations. Meanwhile, all this was done while managing his own landscaping business (Marathon Lawn Service) and raising two children, now grown. His personal best of 3 hours 22 minutes set at the 1976 Rochester Marathon will not challenge any records, but his longevity and enthusiasm for running is legend.

Frank is currently battling back from three strokes and a bacterial infection around his heart. For many, running is an attractive way to achieve those goals as it doesn't require membership to a fitness center or expensive equipment. Experienced runners have some tips for novices: take it slow, and don't skimp on good shoes.

"Start simple," said Brian Robertson, past president of the Findlay Striders Running Club.

Current club president Dave Essinger said it's important to follow a training plan and to take it slowly. For many people "it can be tempting," once you're an experienced enough runner that you're a bit faster, to try to run more and longer. But he said a good rule of thumb to follow is not to increase your mileage by more than 10 percent a week.

Introducing running into your routine, like starting anything new, is best done gradually, Robertson said. He suggests running 20 minutes at a time, three times a week. Beginners may wish to start with a combination of walking and jogging, he said.

"Some people get intimidated," he said.

Beginners sometimes get frustrated that they can't progress more quickly to longer distances or faster speeds, but it just takes time.

People's attitudes toward running change the more they do it. He's seen people show up to a Striders run and, at the end of it, say it made them miserable and they'll never do it again.

"Six months later to a year later, they've ran their first marathon or they've qualified for (the) Boston (Marathon)," he said.

Robertson said it's normal to feel discomfort while running or jogging.

"It hurts," he said. "It's a little uncomfortable."

But, he said, this discomfort is easier to handle than the serious health problems that come with not exercising. Runners can get joint problems or injuries, but these are "much simpler to treat" than high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease, Robertson said.

Robertson said it's also important to pay attention to warming up and cooling down.

"You want to do a little bit of stretching but not heavy stretching before a run because your muscles are not warmed up," he said.

He recommends starting the run with a "warm-up period" of jogging slowly or walking, before going faster. If you're running a long distance, you might want to run the first mile at a slower pace, he said.

"Stretching is really most important after the run," he said. "A good stretch is part of your cool down."

Robertson said the running club allows people with varying levels of running experience to get to know each other. A beginner, for example, might seek advice on running shoes from someone who has been running for more time, he said.

"Shoes are critical," Robertson said. "There's just no doubt about it."

Essinger said it may be expensive to get good running shoes, but it is necessary.

"You're going to get 300 to 500 miles out of those shoes," he said, so it's worth it to invest in a good pair.

"There are a lot of great places to run in the Findlay area," Essinger said.

He said that in the winter, many people prefer to run on treadmills. But there are other options to snowy, icy roads, Essinger said.

"This is a good time of year to do trail running. ... A lot of us run at Van Buren State Park on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons," he said.

Monica Copeland, who is new to the Striders club, said she is part of a group of women who run on treadmills together in the winter. She said Striders is "so inclusive," with members of all different experience levels.

Striders club members meet regularly to run together. The club lists its running schedule on its Web site, www.findlaystriders.com.

To join the club's e-mail list, send an e-mail to runclub@findlaystriders.com. Try running...

Why Running helps you to keep fit

Author: Nick Garcia
You may either love or hate running, but you will not deny the good effect it has on the health and body. Running helps you to keep fit, your skin and muscle tone rises, and your ab gets flatter.
Once you start running you usually can't stop and simply get addicted. Repetitiveness is usually a key element to successful running. Once you stop practicing, you might get lack of motivation and thus stop training. Before you understand that you are not getting any improvement, time will have passed. For those of you who want to see the result of their running workouts, remember that you need to run at least two times a week. You may choose to run from 15 minutes to half an hour which must depend on your level of physical training. However, in any case you are to do that on a regular basis. Your stamina will keep up to two weeks and then will begin declining. Thus, keeping to a steady running schedule is crucial.
We also wanted to warn you that without an increase in running load, you will also not achieve a good result. At some point you will find that your weight got steady, and you feel the same while running along the path you are used to. It is advised to increase the load gradually. In such a way your body will develop an ability to cope with longer distances and greater loads. For instance, you may interchange longer runs with shorter, running along the hilly surface with running along a flat surface, or running at a slower pace with running at a quicker pace. What is no less important in running is the stopping time. This factor plays important role for those who are seeking burning calories and improving fitness. Only sports people will run long distance at a steady pace without stopping to catch their breath. If you make half-an-hour runs, make sure that once in fifteen minutes you change your run for a walk of about 2-5 minutes. During this time you will recover your breath without making your heart rate fall too much. Such runs usually help to burn quite a lot of fat.

And the last advice. Use special running sneakers for your runs. It has been proven that while running the pressure on your joints increase almost twice. Some of the most common runners’ injuries are pain in ankles and knees. Thus, correctly chosen footwear and socks will help you to avoid a lot of problems. When you get to the shop you will see that the running shoes are quite expensive, however, when your health is at stake, no money matter. You will also enjoy the comfortable feel while running. All in all, running is a workout that should become a part of your everyday life.
About the Author:
For free running tips visit our Runners Community
Article Source: ArticlesBase.com - Why Running helps you to keep fit

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://findlaystriders.blogspot.com/2010/01/new-year-new-you.html' title='New Year, New You?
